Remove the backswing and train a compact punch volley.

  • Players2
  • Time10 min
  • EquipmentBasket of balls, a back fence or curtain

Setup: Player stands with their heels about a racquet-length from the back fence. Feeder stands 15-20 feet away with a basket and feeds firm balls by hand or racquet.

  1. Feeder sends balls alternately to forehand and backhand volleys at chest height.
  2. Player volleys back to the feeder with a short punch, never touching the fence with the racquet.
  3. After 20 balls, add low balls that require knee bend.
  4. Move to the net and repeat 20 balls, keeping the same short motion.

Coaching cues

  • Racquet head above the wrist
  • Punch, then freeze
  • Continental grip for both sides

Common mistakes

  • Swinging back and hitting the fence
  • Dropping the racquet head on low balls

Progression: Feeder speeds up and randomizes direction and height.

Coach's note: The fence gives instant feedback no coach can match: hit it and you know your backswing is too big.
