  • Players2
  • Time12 min
  • EquipmentRope or string about 2 ft above the net (optional), basket of balls

Setup: Both players at the ad-side baseline. Optional rope stretched about 2 feet above the tape as a 'ceiling'.

  1. Rally backhand slice crosscourt only.
  2. Every ball must clear the net but stay below the rope or imagined ceiling.
  3. Balls landing short of the service line count as errors.
  4. Play to 15 points, then switch to forehand slices.

Coaching cues

  • Start the racquet above the ball
  • Swing forward more than down
  • Hold the finish with the face slightly open

Common mistakes

  • Chopping steeply down so the ball floats
  • Rotating the shoulders open too early

Progression: Allow topspin after three slices to practice changing spin and pace.

Coach's note: A skidding slice is one of the best tools against players with extreme grips who love high balls.
