Learn when and how to change direction down the line with the backhand.

Setup: Players rally backhand to backhand crosscourt on the ad side.
- Rally crosscourt backhands.
- Either player may change direction down the line after four crosscourt shots.
- The point is then played out in the full singles court.
- Score points; first to 7.
Coaching cues
- Only change direction on a balanced ball
- Use crosscourt height; flatten down the line
- Recover for the crosscourt reply after changing direction
Common mistakes
- Changing direction from a defensive position
- Not recovering after the line change
Progression: Require the down-the-line ball to land behind the service line to count.
Coach's note: Direction changes are about choosing the right ball, not just executing the shot.
