  • Time15 min
  • EquipmentBasket of balls

Setup: Player starts at the baseline center. Feeder stands at the opposite baseline with a basket.

  1. Feeder hits a short ball landing near the service line.
  2. Player moves in and approaches down the line.
  3. Player follows the line of the ball and split steps as the feeder makes contact.
  4. Feeder sends a passing ball; player volleys into the open court.
  5. Feeder lobs; player turns and hits an overhead, then returns to the baseline.

Coaching cues

  • Approach down the line, follow the ball
  • Split as the feeder hits, wherever you are
  • Close forward after the first volley

Common mistakes

  • Stopping to watch the approach in no-man's land
  • Overhitting the approach shot

Progression: After the feed, play the point out live; the feeder may pass or lob.

Coach's note: The transition is the most neglected area of the club game. A modest approach plus solid net coverage wins more than a huge approach without follow-through.
