FIND YOUR TENNIS HOME

Memberships and clubs

Every player needs a home base. A club gives you reliable courts, regular partners, coaching and a community that keeps you coming back. A national membership opens the door to leagues, tournaments and ratings. And your free Big Tennis membership keeps the best tips, drills and member perks flowing to your inbox. Here’s how to choose the right mix.

PLAYING IN THE US

USTA membership benefits

If you want to play adult leagues or sanctioned tournaments in the United States, a USTA membership is usually your ticket in. Benefits and pricing change over time, so check the USTA website for current details, but membership has generally included:

  • Eligibility for USTA League play and sanctioned tournaments nationwide
  • An official rating and ranking, plus a path to section and national championships
  • Early ticket access for select major tennis events
  • Partner discounts on equipment, travel, apparel and recovery tools
  • Discounts on tennis TV and streaming subscriptions
  • Free membership for juniors, with paid adult and senior tiers

Outside the US, your national tennis federation usually plays a similar role. Learn more about governing bodies and ratings on our rankings page.

YOUR OPTIONS

Types of tennis clubs

Public parks

Affordable or free courts, often with city-run lessons and leagues. Great for flexible, budget-friendly play, though peak-time courts can be busy.

Private tennis clubs

Dedicated tennis facilities with court booking, teaching pros, ladders and team play. A strong tennis culture and easy access to partners.

Country clubs

Tennis alongside golf, pools, dining and social events. Ideal for families who want a full lifestyle club; tennis programs vary widely in strength.

Academies

Training-focused facilities with structured programs for juniors and adults. Best for players chasing serious improvement. See our directory.

CHECKLIST

How to choose a tennis club

Visit at a busy time, ask to hit on the courts and talk to members. Then run through this list.

  • Is it close enough that you’ll actually go several times a week?
  • How easy is it to book courts at the times you play?
  • What court surfaces are available, and are there lights or indoor courts?
  • Are there players at your level, and programs for your age group?
  • Who are the teaching pros, and what certifications do they hold?
  • Does the club field league teams or run ladders and round-robins?
  • What are the full costs: initiation, dues, court fees, minimums and assessments?
  • Are junior programs run by safeguarding-trained, background-screened coaches?
  • Does the culture feel welcoming to new members?
  • Can you try a trial membership or guest pass first?
Coach’s Tip: The best club is the one where you play the most. A modest facility ten minutes away with a lively social program beats a beautiful club forty minutes away that you visit twice a month.

GET YOUR MONEY’S WORTH

Making the most of your membership

Joining a club is the first step. Building a tennis life there is the second. New members who jump in quickly tend to stay longer and enjoy the club far more.

  1. Meet the pros. Introduce yourself to the teaching staff and ask them to place you in the right clinics and match groups.
  2. Join a social event. Mixers and round-robins are the fastest way to meet players at your level.
  3. Get on a team or ladder. Regular, scheduled competition keeps you playing through busy weeks.
  4. Book a standing court time. A recurring slot with the same group builds consistency and friendships.
  5. Track your progress. Log your matches and sessions in our tennis journal so you can see the payoff.
