Setup: Player at the baseline center. Feeder at the opposite baseline with a basket.

  1. Feeder hits a short, low ball to the player's backhand.
  2. Player moves in and hits a slice approach down the line.
  3. Player follows the line of the ball and split steps at the service line.
  4. Play the point out live.

Coaching cues

  • Stay low through the shot
  • Keep moving forward through contact
  • Split before the first volley

Common mistakes

  • Slicing high so the passer gets a comfortable ball
  • Stopping to admire the approach

Progression: Feed short balls to both sides so the player must choose topspin or slice approaches.

Coach's note: A slice approach stays low and forces the passer to hit up, giving you an easier first volley.
