Learn when and how to change direction down the line with the backhand.

Setup: Players rally backhand to backhand crosscourt on the ad side.

  1. Rally crosscourt backhands.
  2. Either player may change direction down the line after four crosscourt shots.
  3. The point is then played out in the full singles court.
  4. Score points; first to 7.

Coaching cues

  • Only change direction on a balanced ball
  • Use crosscourt height; flatten down the line
  • Recover for the crosscourt reply after changing direction

Common mistakes

  • Changing direction from a defensive position
  • Not recovering after the line change

Progression: Require the down-the-line ball to land behind the service line to count.

Coach's note: Direction changes are about choosing the right ball, not just executing the shot.
